Hyundai Next Generation Vehicle:

Voice User Interface Optimization for Autonomous Driving UX

  •  Identify  usability issues in the existing Avante's VUI
  •  Design  the VUI flow and uncover use cases for autonomous driving mode
  •  Derive  VUI & GUI design guidelines considering the transition from semi-autonomous to fully-autonomous driving
  •  Prototype  enhanced VUI and the corresponding GUI

*Prototype unavailable for public dissemination

VUI Guidelines

  • For  simple  tasks, use implicit confirmations instead of explicit ones, and limit the number of turn units to no more than two.
  • For  complex  tasks, present concise questions to guide users in making comparisons and selections effectively
  • When providing  narrowing-down  questions, ensure options are offered selectively and avoid presenting all available choices at once
  • In  error  scenarios, include explanations of the error and provide examples of corrective utterances to guide users toward resolution

GUI Guidelines

  • Design results of  conversation depth  (e.g., question – exploration – outcome) to be visually clear, ensuring that users do not lose their way in the process
  • Provide  visual cues , such as chips, for follow-up questions or available functionalities at each stage of the interaction to enhance guidance
  • Facilitate visual exploration by offering appropriate  menu layouts  (e.g., lists, grids) and image-based information tailored to different types of information searches

Significant improvements in usability compared to the AVNT's existing VUI system

  • Evidenced by user feedback and quantitative metrics
  • Statistically significant effects of revised VUI on usability, task completion time, cognitive load, and satisfaction (p < 0.001)
  • Turn units/complexity decreased by 37%
